Matt's Game Plan

(Wih minor translation by Riki Tikki)

The Tourney will be held in three distinct stages, and will be organized and scheduled by me
under the observation of an impartial jury. These three stages are as follows:

1. The qualification round, to determine the eight best players from the
roster that will then go to

2. Quarter- and semifinals, to determine 4 players for

3. Final and game for third place.

Winner of the tourney is the winner of the final, he will win a 50$ buy at
battlefront.com

THE QUALIFICATION ROUND:

The qualification rounds calls for a display of certain tactical skills and
evaluates an overall point score for each player.

The roster is distributed into groups of four players (20 players in this case
= 5 groups A - E). (Normally this would be done drawing names for the groups
from a box, in our case that was not possible due to the many versions of
TacOps within the roster that obliged me to join matching versions in groups).

Each player within a group plays each other player within the group in one
scenario (two games each, one as US, one as OPFOR), so plays a total of six
games. The three scenarios are identical in every group.

The three qualification scenarios are deliberately unbalanced (#1 and #2 in
favour of US, #3 in favour of OPFOR). This allows for decisive score
evaluation and is not a problem, since every player plays both sides once.

The player (in a group) with the highest score after six games is considered
the group winner. *All* group winners qualify for quarter finals.

The player (in a group) with the second best score after six games is
considered the group second. Of all group seconds *the three highest scores*
qualify for quarter finals.

In case of equal scores within a group after six games (highly unlikely, but
possible) a decision game will take place between the players in question to
determine the players rank within the group. Winner of this decision game gets
the higher rank.

In case of equal scores within all the groups second best players after six
games (again, highly unlikely, but possible) a decision game will take place
between the players in question to determine the players rank within the
seconds. Winner of this decision game is considered the better second.

Within a group, who plays whom in which scenario is determined for all groups
before the tourney (side choice I determined by rolling dice) as follows:

Scenario 1:
Player 1 : Player 2 (Player 1 plays US first)
Player 3 : Player 4 (Player 4 plays US first)

Scenario 2:
Player 1 : Player 3 (Player 1 plays US first)
Player 2 : Player 4 (Player 2 plays US first)

Scenario 3
Player 1 : Player 4 (Player 1 plays US first)
Player 2 : Player 3 (Player 3 plays US first)

To determine the players position in each group (i.e. who is player 1, 2,
etc.) I used dice.

Qualification round is played via IRC (i.e. , the game is set to PBEM mode but the orders files are
exchanged via direct data transfer). That should reduce every game duration to
about 1 hour real time.

QARTER- AND SEMIFINALS

In the quarter- and semifinals balanced boxed scenarios are used to determine
the finalists (scenarios will be disclosed after end of qualification round).

The eight quarterfinalists are paired into 4 pairs, each pair playing the same
scenario.

The quarter is played k.o. system, i.e. winners go on, losers are out.

Quarters and Semifinals are played in normal PBEM manner, i.e. by email
(though, if both players of a pair agree to it they may use IRC again)

The pairs in quarters will be as follows (sides will be determined by dice
just before the games):

Quarterfinals:

QF1 >> 1st Group B vs. 2nd Group C
QF2 >> 1st Group C vs. 2nd Group B
QF3 >> 1st Group D vs. 2nd Group E
QF4 >> 1st Group E vs. 2nd Group D

The four remaining Semifinalists will be paired into two pairs, each pair
playing the same scenario.

The winners of the semifinals will play the final game, the losers will play
for third.

The pairs in semis will be as follows (sides will be determined by dice just
before the games):

Semifinals:

SF1 >> Winner QF1 : Winner QF3
SF2 >> Winner QF2 : Winner QF4

-----------------------------------------

FINAL AND GAME FOR THIRD

The final and the game for third are played using custom scenarios. They will
be conducted via normal email, but instead of mailing the turns to the
opponent the players will be sending their turns to a listserver installed for
the event, so the audience can download the turns as well and watch the games
unfold.

Game for third will use the MAD GENERAL scenario.

Final will use THE MOTHERLAND scenario.

Pairings:

Game for third place: Loser SF1 : Loser SF2
Final: Winner SF1 : Winner SF2

Winner of the final is the winner of the tourney. He will have completed nine
games at least, provided there were no decision games needed in the
qualification round.
